Sheridan’s Practical Nursing diploma program equips you with the skills you need to enter the growing field of nursing.

State-of-the-art education

This program is delivered by highly qualified master’s-credentialed RNs with extensive specialized experience in family care, maternity care, emergency response, mental health, medical intervention and long-term care facilitation; all are excellent educators. You’ll learn in our state-of-the-art clinic complete with simulation mannequins that can be programmed to display various symptoms.

Things you’ll learn to do

Assist clients with nutrition, elimination, medication, safety, ambulation and hygiene. Chart patients’ progress and assess their conditions. Care for wounds, change dressings and give medication. Educate and promote health and well-being. Care for patients through all stages of a disease process including palliative care.

Hands-on experience

In your final semester, you’ll participate in a 360-hour practicum, gaining on-the-job experience that will boost your résumé and build your confidence. While most placements are local, you can choose to apply for an international placement in the Dominican Republic or in the Canadian north.

Clinical placements are critical to integrated learning as a Practical Nurse and are mandatory to be successful in the program. Students can be placed within 150 kilometers of Sheridan College. Students are expected to provide their own transportation to clinical placements.

Approved by the College of Nurses of Ontario

Sheridan’s four-semester Practical Nursing diploma program is approved (Category 1) by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). When you graduate from this program, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario.

  • Min GPA: 80.0%
  • Min IELTS overall: 6.0 (Min Reading: 5.5, Min Writing: 5.5, Min Listening: 5.5, Min Speaking: 5.5)
  • Health Occupations Aptitude Examination
  • Grade 12 English, Grade 12 Mathematics with a minimum grade of 70%, Grade 11 Biology AND Grade 11 Chemistry or equivalents
  • Criminal Record Check and Immunizations: Students are required to submit a criminal record check and immunization records prior to starting their clinical placements
  • CPR Level C and Standard First Aid: Students must obtain their certifications prior to starting their practicum
  • Indian applicants: Require an IELTS overall score of 6 with no band less than 6
