How to Ace Your Nursing Exams? Learn the Secrets of Success!
by Arunachalam
Nursing is a fulfilling career. You get the opportunity to provide care for patients across all walks of life and interact with their friends and family, leaving a lasting impact on their lives. A nurse gets to work in several settings in their professional life and has several opportunities to grow. Most people aspire to become successful nurses as there are countless possibilities and numerous challenges. But passing through nursing school is one of the main obstacles that deters many from choosing the nursing profession.
Do you want to become a nurse but are unsure of how to succeed in nursing school? In this blog we will provide some tips to ace your nursing exams successfully.
Manage your exam anxiety well
Nursing students fall into one of two categories, those who struggle with test anxiety and let it hinder their progress and those who suffer from test anxiety and nonetheless perform well. First, the important thing is that there is nothing wrong with you at all—your response is very appropriate and fully normal. Test anxiety isn’t the problem; it's how you handle it that counts. When test anxiety takes over, you are unable to think critically about the material you are presented with. It's really challenging to come out of fight-or-flight mode once you've entered it. So, remain calm and confident and tell yourself that you are capable to do this exam well.
Avoid all negative self-defeating thoughts
Successful students recognise them and replace them. Never affirm that you don’t possess the knowledge to ace the exam or that you are not going to be successful. Instead, say things like, “I studied hard and I'm doing my best on this exam,” which are more uplifting and affirming. If you catch yourself thinking these words while studying or taking a test, change them right away to something more positive.
Take a deep breath
Deep breathing is one of the exam-calming strategies used by successful students. To relieve the body of extra tension, try deep breathing and tensing/releasing muscle groups. You should take a deep breath while using positive self-talk. As you inhale slowly and fully, repeat the phrase in your head. Then repeat that while you exhale.
Have faith in yourself
Nursing students who succeed in their exams have faith in themselves. They have faith that they have prepared adequately and that they will remember all the important details when it is time to be examined. Students who lack self-confidence frequently overstudy or study ineffectively, wasting a great deal of time. So, trusting yourself now is a good idea. You most likely know the topic because you attended the class, took notes, prepared for the exam, and know the complete information. Have faith in yourself that you can read through each question thoroughly, recall relevant information, and write the correct answer.
De-stress before exam
You should stay calm and de-stress before an exam. Successful students take proactive measures to do this. They spend some time to encourage calm or cheerful emotions rather than joining in with other students who are cramming at the last minute and testing each other frantically. Playing with your children, listening to music, or taking a stroll are all excellent ways to de-stress.
Avoid looking at the clock
A successful student does not allow timed tests to cause unnecessarily high anxiety. Yes, many people find the exam timings to be daunting. If the timer is distracting you, see if you can hide it from view and use a conventional clock to determine how much time is left. If there is no way to hide the timer, don't check it and just answer each question one at a time. Stress hormones start to work once you start keeping an eye on the time, which swiftly increases worry.
Don’t study on the day of exam
Achieving students don't study or cram the day of the test. Preparing for the exam by cramming reinforces your lack of confidence in yourself and heightens nervousness. Once more, have faith in your preparation and knowledge of the subject.
Grades really do not define what you are
Successful students avoid letting their grades affect how they feel about themselves. Your attitude and commitment to understanding the topic matter more than your grade. Even if you occasionally get a few exam questions wrong, you can and will be a great nurse.
Conclusion
Handle your exam time and curriculum strategically. If you are someone who prepares well in advance for your exams, then these tips will help you in performing even better in your next exam.
