Important Things You Should Know Before Applying for Nursing Jobs in the UK?
by Arunachalam
Excellent career opportunities make UK all the more appealing for nursing students. Every year thousands of nursing professionals come to the UK to make a successful career. Most of these international nurses aspire to take up a job with the National Health Service (NHS).
That the nursing profession is a highly rewarding career in the UK is well known. For international nurses, the most important attraction of taking up employment in the UK is the National Health Service. It is not only abundant in nursing jobs for both native and the overseas nurses but the multiple benefits that come with NHS jobs are highly attractive.
In this blog we will discuss the important things that you must know in order to become a successful nurse in the United Kingdom. You must also have a clear knowledge of all that a nurse is expected to do in addition to knowing how to take care of people.
Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
Registration with the NMC is a requirement to be aware of before applying for nursing positions in the UK (The Nursing and Midwifery Council). It is the regulatory body in charge of regulating the practice of nursing and midwifery.
A UK work permit and NMC registration are required in order to practice nursing in the UK. This is because in order to practice as a nurse or a midwife in the UK, you must have both a valid registration and a PIN number.
The nursing professionals must submit a variety of documents to the NMC to complete this registration. The NMC requires up to 60 working days to provide a decision letter based on registration, rejection, or the need to complete a required term of supervised practice after the submission of the required paperwork.
The letter clarifies if the applicant needs to make an adaptation or if their nursing credentials are sufficient to be accepted and they can be awarded a PIN number without any additional requirements. Additionally, it must be made very clear that NMC does not grant the ability to work in the UK. For non-EEA citizens, a VISA is still required.
CBT & OSCE tests
All foreign nurses seeking nursing positions in the UK must pass both a practical exam known as the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and a competency test known as the computer-based test (CBT).
The multiple-choice computer-based exam is available in many nations across the world, and the OSCE is always held in the UK. This allows applicants to take the exam in their own country.
The candidate is then invited to a face-to-face identity check after passing the OSCE. They are asked to present certain original documents during this interview. This makes it possible for the applicant to become an NMC pin recipient and work as an NHS nurse.
English language proficiency
One of the most important things to understand before applying for a nursing position in the UK is to be able to read, talk, and write in English. Because the healthcare system demands nurses to be able to communicate with patients and co-workers, proficiency in the English language is seen as a crucial component of nursing requirements in the UK.
By taking IELTS, nursing professionals can demonstrate their competence (International English Language Testing System). This will demonstrate the applicants' ability to comprehend and speak the language fluently.
The OET (Occupational English Language Test), a test specifically created for the healthcare industry i.e. doctors, midwives, and nurses. It is another option open to nursing professionals. Nursing practitioners can take the OET to demonstrate their proficiency in language communication.
Documents necessary to work with the NHS
Multiple documents must be submitted at every stage of the hiring process in order to be forwarded directly to the NHS trust. These documents provide as proof of the safety and legal compliance necessary to practice nursing in the UK.
An NHS application form, address verification, a police check from the applicant's home country, references, etc. are a few examples of these documents. NHS requests these records so that the nurse applicant's record is backed up by the necessary evidence.
Numerous NHS organisations band together to take the lead in organising recruiting drives that adhere to the NHS employer's code of practice. Nursing professionals might take advantage of these chances to land a dependable nursing position in the UK.
