Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM)
by Arunachalam
Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM)
Australia is a choice destination for migrants, and the Australian Government welcomes applicants who possess the skills needed to add to Australia’s diverse and rich economy.
One of the pathways to obtaining PR in Australia is through the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Worker Visa; a Permanent Resident (PR) Visa that is issued by the Australian government. Holders of this visa are qualified foreign nationals and their eligible family members who accompany them, and it authorizes them to live, work and study legally and long-term in Australia. As this is a Permanent Resident Visa, holders of this visa may continue to live, work and study in Australia permanently, as long as they comply with the terms of the visa.
The Skilled Migration Program is the most common form of migration to Australia.
Skilled Subclasses
If you wish to explore this pathway further, you can see if you fall into any of these skilled migration options:
Skilled Independent Subclass 189
This is a permanent visa option, and the applicant does not require sponsorship by a relative or state/territory government. This visa permits you to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia and eligible family members can be included in your application. You may remain in Australia indefinitely with full work rights.
Skilled Nominated Subclass 190
This is a permanent visa requiring nomination by an Australian State or Territory government. You are required to have an occupation on the relevant skilled list, and have undertaken a suitable skills assessment for the occupation. You must satisfy the points test.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491
TheSkilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 is a 5-year provisional visa which requires holders to live, work, and study in regional Australia. To apply for this, you would need to be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government, or sponsored by an eligible Australian relative. Note that the 491 visa replaces the 489.
Graduate Temporary Subclass 485
This is a work visa which can be applied for by international students who have successfully completed a qualification after undertaking 2 years of study in Australia. Your skills and qualification must be relevant to specific occupations. The visa has two streams: Graduate Work stream and Post-Study Work stream.
Recognised Graduate Subclass 476
The Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) allows recent engineering graduates of eligible universities to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience in occupations that are related to their education. It is a temporary visa.
Skilled Regional Subclass 887
The Skilled – Regional (subclass 887) visa is a second stage permanent visa that does not have any points based requirements attached. It grants full legal permanent residence to its holders. To qualify for this visa, you must live in the required region of Australia for 2 years and should have worked full time there for 12 months.
