Studying Abroad: The Changing Trends in 2020
Studying abroad has always been the long-term aspiration of many students, and with good reason too! An overseas education comes with many benefits. Not only will you get a world recognised degree, you will also gain a holistic experience that involves international exposure, the chance to connect with and learn from world-renowned faculty and better employment opportunities. While the Covid pandemic has put a damper on many activities, students who were thinking of studying abroad can still make their dreams come true!
Switching to an online world
Tough times warrant tougher measures. Due to the need for social distancing, universities across the globe were compelled to take the right decisions to ensure that their existing and prospective students stay safe. Most institutes, big or small, have responded by taking their classes online. With classes and lectures delivered through virtual classrooms, students could easily make the switch from in-person to online learning. Regular webinars are held, online discussion groups have opened up and the faculty is available at any time for queries and student interactions.
Thousands of students have been able to move ahead without wasting an important year in their lives. Online education allows students to study in comfort from the safety of their own homes. They can access online resources and take online tests to assess their learning retention. Most institutions have understood the challenges caused by the unprecedented pandemic, and have allowed the students to enjoy the same work rights after the completion of their studies if they opt for online curriculums as they would otherwise avail as a full-time on-campus student.
Digital transformation
To cope with the current scenario, institutions have come up with ways to take online entrances, assessments, interviews and even remote examinations. Due to the challenges and travel restrictions in different countries, they have also extended their application submission and fee payment deadlines, so that the students who wish to enrol for the upcoming intakes can do so easily. There are also new scholarships and more financial aid in place for students who are undertaking online classes.
The concept of blended learning is not new, but has been given an added impetus now in almost every international institution. Students can start the program online, safe at home, and can later on transfer to an on-campus learning environment once the situation eases and travel bans are lifted. By doing this, they can save time, money, and avail of the opportunity to enjoy campus life once the world goes back to pre-Covid normalcy.
Future-proofing careers!
As a result of the pandemic, students have taken a long and hard look at their career choices and many of them are looking at their future with utmost diligence. Future-proof courses, such as those in healthcare, cloud computing, AI and machine learning, medical services, media and telecom, and so on are now much more in demand than ever before. These sectors have proven that they can survive any disaster in the world, and they have been the most sought after in the current situation.
All said and done, there is ample scope for research students in the future as result-oriented domains will now get more focus. It is expected that fields like genomics, virology, pharma and biotechnology will receive added attention, and students who wanted to pursue generic degrees will be likely to opt for more specialised programs.
All institutions and governments are doing their best to streamline and smoothen the path for international students. At the same time, study abroad aspirants have also started to re-evaluate their choices, keeping in mind the importance of health services across the world.
